Do you feel pain in your shoulders for no particular reason? Are your daily movements becoming more and more difficult? It may be capsulitis and we tell you more in this article.

When do we talk about adhesive capsulitis or frozen shoulder?

The capsule of the shoulder is a connective tissue, composed of collagen fibers, which surrounds the entire joint. When this joint capsule retracts, for reasons that remain unknown, this can lead to inflammation, stiffness and pain. This is called capsulitis or frozen shoulder. This mainly concerns people between 40 and 60 years old, especially women. The idiopathic form (which occurs for no apparent reason) lasts between eighteen months and two years before disappearing.

An old injury (tendonitis, fracture, dislocation, bursitis) or a recent operation may be at the origin of this phenomenon or simply promote it. Beyond that, other conditions would also seem to explain the appearance of shoulder pain: diabetes, a recent stroke, Parkinson's disease, an intense moment of stress...

Capsulitis often sets in gradually, and you will then experience several stages:

    1. a slightly painful shoulder
    2. a more intense pain, especially at night, the inflammation appears, it is the hot or acute phase.
    3. this pain eases but the movements remain limited. This is the cold or sub-acute phase.

    How to act ?

It is important to consult a doctor as soon as possible to limit the installation and spread of the pathology. A doctor can prescribe a medical treatment and act with infiltrations during the acute phase.
During the cold phase, if possible, you should get in touch with a therapist such as a physiotherapist. The idea is to provide gentle movements in several ways: massage, acupuncture, very gentle yoga, simple mobility exercises, lifestyle... Talk to him, he will know how to guide you!
